All these older journalists posting their profound “how I found out about 9/11” takes. I got to my nan’s after school, and she pointed at the TV and said “Look at that? Two in one day. Careless,” clearly thinking all American air traffic controllers were drunks.

found out listening to the radio after school and my mum being tamping because it interfered with the archers and turned it over in frustration before we heard any of the pertinent details

Someone mentioned Chris Moyles being incredibly calm about it

I remember I was listening to Mark and Lard in the car and on the first bulletin it was just reported as a light aircraft crashing into the tower as an accident and they carried on with the normal show for a good 20 minutes before realising what was going on and taking them off.

I seem to remember loads of people hearing about the first one, assuming exactly that, then learning nothing more til that evening.

Yeah I guess if you were working all afternoon with no TV or radio in 2001 I suppose it's perfectly possible you just wouldn't know until after you left?

I was working as a painter and heard the light aircraft thing on the lunch time news bulletin. Listened to music for an hour and when we turned the radio back on to check for an update the station (Today FM I think) was broadcasting Sky News and I thought “well this is fucked up”

Yeah it was a jarring change of pace from small aviation snafu to world completely on fire possible global conflict.
