Yeah I guess if you were working all afternoon with no TV or radio in 2001 I suppose it's perfectly possible you just wouldn't know until after you left?

I was working as a painter and heard the light aircraft thing on the lunch time news bulletin. Listened to music for an hour and when we turned the radio back on to check for an update the station (Today FM I think) was broadcasting Sky News and I thought “well this is fucked up”

Yeah it was a jarring change of pace from small aviation snafu to world completely on fire possible global conflict.
