I've read (& see it in the comments) that they could only perform on Top of the Pops if they had a video. So they just hammered out a joke of a video for Velouria to do the bare minimum to qualify. A lot of those bands defined “alternative” as involving resisting things they saw as corporate innovations like MTV or CD, or synths for that matter. The Replacements had whole songs attacking MTV and intentionally made a non-video for “Bastards of Young”.
