Always feel awkward asking a priest to bless anything, but asked him what else he’d recently blessed after he handed back my cross pendant, and someone had asked him to bless.... an air rifle used for squirrel control.

Me, anxiously: If I ask a priest to bless this cross necklace, will he think I am being ephemeral and idiotic. Is it too frivolous. Bloke, completely self-assured and confident: Father, here's my squirrel gun.

I know it in my brain, but my heart always worries for no reason other than to burn calories. Just find the contrast hysterically funny. Before he blessed it, my friend paused him and was just going through her bag trying to find random things that clearly weren't very important?

Just wear the necklace to church on the day Father blesses throats during cold and flu season and you can kill two birds with one stone!

Ha! Yes. Seen this both ways. Years back, was organising a parish fundraiser-cum-barndance...and we had taken delivery of a load of drinks, some soft, some alcoholic. Priest rocks up and goes "Splendid! And if we run out we can always do the ol' water into wine trick!"

I thought two of the more elderly parishioners sat nearby were going to pee themselves! Certainly they had what writers of Jane Austen's era might have described as an attack of the vapours...
