My daughter's step mum shouts at her wee brother and sister for calling my daughter big sister, she says she's not a proper sister and not related at all.
-
That’s horrible! Poor thing. I don’t view the sister I share a dad with differently to the siblings I share “only” a mother with whatsoever.

what about if it's someone you really quite strongly dislike but happen to have the same dad?
-
Then say why you don’t like them, don’t be a dick about biology. If you’re fixating on the fact you have the same dad but different mums, you’re probably the dick and they’re fine.

I have two “half” brothers and always forget they’re not full unless it comes up. I don’t know if it makes a difference in that we all lived with my mum (I was at my dads at the weekend).
-
Yeah, I wondered if it was because we'd all lived with my mum at some point, then remembered I'd always just called my 'full stepsister' my sister, and the daughter my dad and second wife had my sister too.

I think I just do it with people who don't know me well to explain away saying things like "my mum" and "his mum" and not "our mum". Guess some of it is preempting the occasional "oh, he's not your actual brother then" though.
-
Same, I may use it to explain away complicated family dynamics but mostly I'd say I've 4 brothers & 1 sister. I think 2 of my brothers use it more because they are full brothers but the rest of us only have half siblings so really, its all we've got
