I would say that your teacher was being particularly harsh on Clapton. Clapton credits his love for his son as the force for finally getting sober; a fairly responsible reaction in fact.

A relative of mine worked for him during that era and yeah, he was an absolute mess a lot of the time, despite their best efforts.

Certainly until he finally got himself sorted out (the love of the right woman, perhaps) he was a self-admitted basket case. That started to change when Conor came along I believe.

I also found out later Clapton was in another country at the time, he was being cared for by his nanny
