The comments were 95% critical, it was absolutely panned on Twitter, and eventually taken down. An investigation into how it came to be published followed, with reprimands, and Burchill was told she wouldn’t be writing for them again. Now, they’d just publish it proudly.

Basically, transphobes spent the next few years striving to move the mainstream media line so these sentiments became acceptable again, and they held all the institutional power, so it worked
