There are so many issues in this worrying piece by an author who claims to be a lecturer in the UK: but believing you can assess students’ mental health better than a GP, that it’s easy to access help & get a diagnosis, and that if you’re “outwardly stable” you’re fine is grimpic.twitter.com/XZnwE6JUaJ

This sort of attitude carries over into physical health too: “but you don’t look ill!” or dismissing people’s illness if they force themselves to work/meet obligations. Just awful from a teacher, and irresponsible to print.

Oh ffs. And it’s not just the callousness and arrogance, it’s the underlying model of assessment as a test of short-term memory and stamina and bluffing, so that allowing more time and/or extensions invalidates the exercise.

Number of students who, in twenty-five years of university teaching, I have suspected of trying to game the mitigation system: none. Number of students I have tried to persuade to take up the possibility of mitigation for their real problems, who have refused: average two a year?

Does modern society have a mental health crisis? Are structural and environmental factors possibly responsible for poor student mental health? No, it is the kids who are solipsistic narcissists,

Dare I ask where this is from? The Times continuing its campaign to denounce the entirety of UK higher education? Telegraph Premium?

Absolutely horrifying stuff! This is one of the reasons why i carry ASD dx letter with me when I travel - i’m terrified that people will look at me and refuse to believe that I should be allowed extra time to go through security to prevent meltdown etc.

It’s horrendous. The vast, vast majority of my friends with MH problems are “outwardly stable”, and why on earth would you divulge your problems to someone with attitudes this archaic and stigmatising?

Unbelievable that people would rather accuse people of lying than question whether university life makes people miserable

Hence anti-depressants being "over-prescribed" - it's something the GP can do there and then for someone struggling, rather than an 18month+ wait for therapy.
