This is sharp on the moral panic around ‘cancel culture’: “The ability of middle-aged gatekeepers to control the agenda has been usurped by a new generation of activists who can spread information through their own networks.”

I think dialogue between generations would be more productive.

Yeah unfortunately the majority of olds don't want to listen do they, the majority support for Corbyn's Labour at the last election from under 45s really doesn't fit the narrative pushed by the established British political commentators

Hmm.. never thought of it that way: is 'cancelling' a generational conflict against an older generation? Some words got a new meaning, and new taboos developed on other words. If you keep using words the way you learnt them, you get in trouble.

Too binary an argument young vs old. It does a disservice to the many older folks.

The minute we start making sweeping generalisations about any demographic - we play into a binary colonial mindset which perpetuates prejudice.

This is exactly it. And those usurped gatekeepers believe they have an inalienable right to these platforms. This whole debate about cancel culture and free speech is in a large way being driven by self-interest in trying to shut down any criticism of traditional media.

Surely it's the establishment who used to do the gatekeeping. Not convinced its an age thing.

It’s actually propaganda that spread disinformation. Heavily propagandised and unthinking people are simply the agents or the carriers of lies.

That’s a bit ambitious. Often it’s just a bunch of frothing overreactions that brook no argument, know no context, but act with a rage, intensity and certainty that would put a Victorian purity league to shame. For every Rowling there’s a Rupaul. And sexism and ageism abound.
