In my experience as a language school teacher, there was an English only rule because students had multiple first-languages, and English ensured no one was left out. It also helped learning of course, but the main reason was one of empathy for all in the room.
I have ridiculous hearing made worse by hypervigilance and I overhear FAR more than I want to every time I'm in hospital, it's a relief when they use a language I don't speak but also it's nice when they use a language other people speak? Monolingualism is weird.
