I think I heard cold water is what you need, but I definitely learnt that from either TV or reddit. If it's the latter I'd say they knew what they were talking about

I was always told just soak in cold water for several hours, then wash as normal. The one time I had to use it it worked ok

Poor You! I don't think salt will do anything. Cold water is best (definitely not hot), & a bio wash product. The sooner you get it soaking (before it's dried), the better. I speak with all the authority of a man who 40 years ago worked as a hospital porter in a haematology lab.
