I think sometimes very online people can be too quick to attack people based on old or one off tweets and comments, but that sincere apologies are possible and usually accepted by the majority of people affected. It’s rare that someone does something so grim they can’t recover.

It’s also very tiresome when “cancel culture”, a slippery, unhelpful term anyway, is used in this way: just a petulant demand that people in the public eye, professional writers, not be held to account or criticised for their words and opinions expressed.
