In my non humble opinion, I hate the way Oxbridge admissions is such a hot topic every 7 weeks. Across all universities Black students disproportionately face crises of mental health, lack of support, higher rates of dropping out and a stark attainment gap.

It doesn’t matter whether that’s at Cambridge or if it’s at London Met. Black students shouldn’t have to be ‘exceptional’ in order to have light shone on them. Suddenly increasing Oxbridge admissions doesn’t mean Oxbridge will be equipped to sufficiently support those students.

Freedom will not be an extension of Black Excellence, considering that the pay gap widens the more qualifications we earn. Instead we should be aiming to universalise access to sustainable and prosperous livelihoods, rather than select few rising to the top.

When I was an academic caseworker at UEL, wehad huge problems with lecturers not accepting extenuating circumstances from black students, but always from mediocre white boys. They were just desperate to lock them off their courses
