THIS IS MY BIG THING: students drop history FOR A REASON. Saying "oh we need to make history mandatory for longer" or "we need more history lessons" doesn't address why so few students choose to study it voluntarily.
Sorry to SHOUT but I get so frustrated with the idea that "more history" is a simple answer to any of this.
So is the answer to teach it better, so more want to carry on with it?
Yes, I think so. Less focus on great ppl who might deserve statues perhaps?
Yes, and support better teaching with better resources, and do more to show the relevance to contemporary life. But also to open it up more later in life -- for example, we could drop the requirement for a history A level.
I think *even* Oxbridge has dropped a requirement for A levels *even* for Greek tho @chrisbrooke will know better
We don't require history - our offer is AAB inc. History or a related subject*, e.g. English, Philosophy, Religious Studies or Classical Civilisation or other humanities based essay writing subject. But A levels require GCSEs (and how many students want to switch at degree?)
The two degrees I teach on at Cambridge are Human Social & Political Sciences and History & Politics, and the students for HSPS have done loads of different A-Levels and the students for H&P have done...H&P. I prefer the variety (though can see why H is useful for a H degree).
When I went to Warwick, both History and English Lit were both required for the Eng Lit course and were a huge help.
