I confess, most statues mean zero to me. I presume they are mostly of unpleasant rich white men. I think you learn more when they are toppled.

It was a problem for the council that people attending nearby graves were offended by the proximity of Savile’s grave and with the number of times it got vandalised. This detracted from the peace of the area. Some locals wanted him exhumed and cremated or buried elsewhere.

Toppling statues of slavers once heralded as ‘great men’ is iconic & deserved, stripping them of their ill-earned rank in society, but is there an argument for opening places like that basement because of what actually happened, like Auschwitz & Kunta Kinte Island in Gambia?
