Even though I was born and raised in a council estate my secondary modern school in Leicester had a wide catchment area. So it had pupils from all tenures. Most of the home owners even though they seemed posh to me were mainly well paid factory and office workers.

My parents got a mortgage in 1985 and they were an electrician and an office-admin bod. Probably could afford it because they spent nothing on family holidays *worm-can opening slowly*.
