Every argument from the Labour Right always boils down to “but what if a wealthy man in a top hat gets a shiny pound coin? Unthinkable.” Happier to see poverty continue than enact a policy without means-testing. Grow up.

It's the same argument the tory right uses just framed differently. "but what if the undeserving poor get a pittance they haven't earned?!"

This is the argument for means testing and against universal benefits. You can remove the means test if you make the benefit taxable!

Exactly. I'm sure they know this, but have been conditioned not to say anything that might not appeal to the mythical rump of Mail readers who might vote for them.

Also: too thick to understand the benefits of universality, and too thick too thick to understand that privatising/marketising a public service has other effects too: on the staff and on the service itself

Imagine a place in which everyone got a UBI and (gasp) everyone paid the tax they’re supposed to.

If one were somehow too wealthy to accept a smidge of public assistance & merely think of it as a wee tax rebate, I submit that person should be too wealthy to avoid Madame la Guillotine. Framing it such might lead a few toffs to admit that getting shiny pound coins isn't so bad,

Of course we know envy has nothing to do with it for them. Its a characteristic misreading of the 'working classes' as petty and small minded. They think it looks bad, and as usual, they can't be arsed to explain it.
