“Common sense” is an intensely meaningless term, used exclusively to bat away criticism

It's also meaningless when used to describe a nation which emptied supermarkets' stocks of toilet paper for weeks for no reason.

This. Absolutely. The first lecture I ever sat through in my first year as an undergraduate began with my lecturer (in sociology) boldly claiming "There is no such thing as 'common sense'". I've never seen anything since that his contradicted this.

My sociology lecturer had a variant on this 'common sense is not always good sense'

If common sense kept people alive, then no factory acts, no health and safety acts, no associated regulations and more workplace-related fatalities. Common sense is lauded by the same people who disregard H&S as ‘red tape’ because they’re the last people exposed to risks at work.

I hate the term common sense. It's code for "I have no rational or evidential base for this belief, but it just feels right"

If you want to find that term just look at the bio of any Tory troll on Twitter... Most of them claim to have it and feel the need to tell us.
