This feels like the best example of a phenomenon I’ve noticed: Starmer acting like Brown as PM, rather than even Miliband in opposition. Hyper-technocratic slow decision-making with minimal impact.

Miliband’s whole schtick was trying to sell “austerity, but more slowly”, and Starmer’s already advocating policies more conservative than some of those the government have already put into effect since COVID broke out.

It’s exclusively designed to win that very small niche of Labour/Tory swing voters, which involves dragging the party heavily to the right, losing huge numbers of voters who came out for the party in 2017.

Landlords are a reliable demographic in turning out to vote, as are property owners generally. People who rent are more likely to be in lower socio-economic categories, with accompanying tendency for poorer turnout. Hence Labour sucking up to the likes of the NRLA.
