Why is so much of adulthood thinking posh people you meet have really unusual names, then discovering it’s a nonsensical, unrelated nickname for something like “Alan”.

I worked with a very tradition-minded, very English, very posh old chap by the name of "Flint". I have no idea how that was derived from his real name, which was Edward.
