Had barely any books at home growing up, so am a hoarder now, but I think it’s healthier for kids if the spectrum of thought available to them at home is wider than Tony Blair’s ‘A Journey’ —> “The Bell Curve”.

Rick Perlstein could be called left-wing (at least a left-liberal, and well-liked among leftists), and iirc Bryan Burrough was pretty sympathetic to the left in Days of Rage, so that's two. Nothing as left as Irving, Rand or either Murray are to the right though.
-
In fact Perlstein has written for Jacobin! My understanding is he's in the same millieu of "serious books for the DSA American left" as, say, Corey Robin.

The Goves’ shelving is so random up that it’s difficult to find context, although I’d say it’s relatively understandable that someone who’s been active in Holocaust education would have books by Irving. The Bell Curve is perhaps a different matter.
-
Yeah, the Irving book wasn’t surprising given he appeared to have an obsession with Mussolini and Hitler in WW2. The Bell Curve and Douglas Murray are the big alarm bells given his previous own books and pamphlets. But cannot fathom how they’ve organised the books at all?

Would you really expect it to though? I can't imagine too many Labour folk have a Thatcher bio on their shelves. Also, it's not like we didn't already know that Gove was a proto-fascist already.
-
I’ve got several Thatcher bios, a Cameron one, two Boris ones, as do quite a few of my friends. I’d say my collection of political/historical books is narrower than most of my friends’ and I stil have a much wider spectrum than the Gove/Vine household.
