Why do people, especially journalists, tweet “Hi @[name], can you follow me so I can DM?” to their whole timelines? Is it to pressure the other person?

I have never understood this. Some often do ten tweets in a row to different people like this!

Yes! It’s bizarre. Always wonder if someone’s told them to do it at some point, because it’s excruciating.

I honestly think it's founded in a lack of understanding how Twitter works. But also I've asked colleagues about it and they've said "I don't mind doing it publicly" which I can't understand or comprehend.

Argh, same: it either says “I’m happy to tell everyone I can’t do basic research” or “I’m happy to try and embarrass someone I want to interview publicly”
