That's because on typewriters it was pretty much required due to the typeface used. Since then, fonts have been refined including properly adjusted kerning, so those readability issues when using a computer are gone.

I always do that as I was taught to do on a typewriter. My daughter was telling me recently that it’s something only old people do.

When I was first learning to touch-type on a computer I was taught to double space. Really hard to get out of the habit now.
