“We can’t pay you until lockdown ends because the software is in the office” is a comforting response from two very big companies, so if anyone fancies donating a few quid via my paypal email in the bio, I might be able to pay my broadband bill.

I fail to believe online systems exist solely on office computers.

Yes, it’s bollocks and the new “our payroll staff all went on holiday at the same time”

Not being able to remote into an office in 2020? Smells like horseshit
-
Absolutely, if my place of work can manage it then they've got no excuse

(with my 'BECTU rep' hat on): it's not a valid excuse because it's not illegal for them to send one finance person into the office to do payroll, but it is illegal for them to not pay you in your terms. Also, that sounds like a totally fictional excuse anyway.

VPN into the office if its a local system, if its a cloud system you can access it from home - or again via VPN from home. Is bullshit
-
Perfectly possible to access your work desktop from home. Lots of IT options, eg https://www.logmein.com/work-from-home-remote-access …

Ask them how they are managing to pay themselves/their own staff...

surely must be. I work in an office, our whole finance and procurement teams are wfh at the minute and we're paying suppliers as usual as far as I'm aware. Sounds like bullshit, sorry mate.
