When I did that job I had a department exams chair ask for a death certificate for someone’s dad

I had one rejected because her partner died but they weren’t married so “it could have been anyone’s death certificate”.

Also, there was one of me in a university with a high level of non-traditional students with chaotic lives, and they were 10x as strict as Warwick, who allowed individual tutors to grant extensions

Yep, my RG was very easy to deal with, tutors empathetic and able to grant extensions. The Post-92 was harsh and immovable, and when I complained was told “we’re trying to be more like RG”. By capping everyone at 40% for going through far worse circumstances?!

I can imagine. I just had to email or meet my course tutor (they often offered to meet in a cafe so it was less stressful) so only had to deal with one person, no paperwork

That sounds great - there’s certainly a more bureaucratic approach taken now. One of the most frustrating things about this current crisis is watching measures be introduced that I’ve always been told are impossible or out of the question. It’s very easy now, apparently

It’s a volume management tactic then and an unenlightened approach
