I used to work in a university, and had to oversee a system (alone) where I helped students submit convoluted forms and gather evidence for ‘extenuating circumstances’ forms for 20,000+ students with mountains of evidence that were still usually rejectedhttps://twitter.com/HPS_Vanessa/status/1247404953930522624 …

I had health problems when doing an OU course last year. Couldn't defer, couldn't even get credit for any of the assignments I'd already completed if I repeated. They kept all the course fees though. I was very upset.

When I did that job I had a department exams chair ask for a death certificate for someone’s dad

-
I had one rejected because her partner died but they weren’t married so “it could have been anyone’s death certificate”.

This is absolutely not my experience. At my uni everyone is working overtime to reorganise deadlines and sort out problems. The organisation of marking is set in regulations & changes need approval. It has to be fair to all.

Some do allow professors to grant extensions: this London university centralised it, removed the department from decisions, and were both strict and arbitrary and obsessed with capping students.

I very clearly remember being told 'the only funeral that is an excuse to hand in work late is your own'.

I missed an entire module because I had an operation and all the pre- and post-op appointments took place on the same day of the week (only day the clinic opened). Therefore I missed every lab day that semester. University rejected my application for extenuating circumstances.
