Lots of people aren’t on contracts, permanent or otherwise, struggling to make rent, and keep afloat, all while volunteering in mutual aid groups. Even small requests add up and the more time you spend on free work, the less on paid work.

Seen lots of people asking this particularly of illustrators and graphic designers. It’s very skilled, labour-intensive work, and should be valued and remunerated as such. That work’s rare enough as it is.

Also, some of us always work from home: being at home doesn’t = watching Netflix and eating crisps all day.

Also, some people (let’s call them ‘women’), are doing most of the extra childcare caused by school closures.

It seems only fair to work for free given that all rent, food and utility costs have been suspended for the duration of the crisis.

Who has been provided with those luxuries? For many, income is dependent on their work, there is little or none otherwise, rent has not been postponed by mandate & all utilities are, at best, being flexible, meaning a build up of debt, which makes the future look daunting
