I am no apologist for the private schools, but I think the simple answer is that the schools have budgets for the whole year, with staffing costs (which still need to be paid) probably 70-80% of this, and they therefore can't lose their planned income for the year.

I absolutely guarantee it will be in the contract about 'circumstances beyond our control'. But its still difficult not have sympathy with the real victims in all this- Telegraph columnists.
