Resistance bands came through as a gym weights substitute and... hmmm. Basically huge rubber bands. Will take some getting used to I think. And I'm constantly concerned they might snap and whack me in the balls or take my eye out or something
Tempted to get one to see if it can help my sprained ankle: worth it?

Might well be. There are quite a few useful videos on you tube with various exercises you can do free standing or sitting (rather than hooking the thing to a pole or frame or something unavailable in most people's homes!)
