I can't do crosswords to save my life, but I found this fascinating while doing research on them for an essay.https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jun/20/two-girls-one-on-each-knee-puzzling-playful-world-of-crossword-alan-connor-review …

Ooh, thank you! Do the NYT mini in under a minute a day, and can do the G2 Quick one easily, but crytics just completely throw me. Will read this and try again...

Hey Dawn, give
@adambspencer a follow. He’s a demon with the cryptic crosswords and often breaks down the clues in to bite size chunks. Not that I’m ever any clearer! Hope you’re well. -
Have done! Thank you: hope I can get into them.

Collect up several cryptics and answers from the same source and work your way through, learn as you ‘cheat’. You’ll get the pattern after a while. Each cryptic setter has their own style. I’m in NZ and regularly do then set by an English person, lots of
references. -
This is spot on. Also start with the 'easier' ones (the Metro is pretty good), to get your head round some common rules, these get you in the mindset for more difficult ones

This one is quite good. Though it does read like a book on how to read code. And I never did get into doing the crosswords. It was sitting in the box under my chair. So I’ve just dug it out.pic.twitter.com/IXE9SMxrc4

there's an episode of Inside No.9 with Alexandra Roach that's good for this, as well as being twisty whodunnit

Was about to say this, I found it really useful!
