Fundamentally misunderstands the government's stated strategy. The mortality rate is radically different across demographics! Can't say whether it'll work but 'cocooning' means protecting groups for whom it is high, developing immunity in the low-risk population until it's safe.https://twitter.com/mattzarb/status/1238567640312041473 …

“Herd immunity” requires 60% of the population to get coronavirus, so 39 million people. With the current mortality rate that’s 780,000 deaths. Which amounts to almost twice the number of British civilian and military casualties in World War Two https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/1238559542155399168 …

There’s precisely no detail on how they plan to “cocoon” the most vulnerable, who need carers, getting food delivered, hospital treatment etc. And early indicators suggest people can catch it twice rather than being immune.

Looks like a convenient way for @BorisJohnson to cull us. Silver linings eh Boris? Won’t have to spend on social care and pensions. Let the kids spread #coronavirus #COVID_19uk and kill off the old or anyone like me with a pre existing medical condition. Shame on you

I'm no fan of that man but that's a really awful thing to suggest. And it's worse because it implicates all the people working really hard to beat this epidemic.

Huge majority of nurses/carers have kids and/or relatives to care for. No way of separating these groups without literally cocooning vulnerable groups in specified places and controlling who goes in/out, providing decontamination on site. Not a chance.

Let’s have it right, this is an even riskier strategy considering the tories have deliberately decimated all of our public services for 10yrs. They’re incapable of sufficiently ‘cocooning’ the most vulnerable, because of our understaffed & resourced services. Social vandalism.

I'd like that detail too, because if I can help, I will. But the evidence for reinfection is weak - https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3074045/coronavirus-who-official-says-theres-no-evidence-reinfected … - essentially hearsay. Moreover recovery implies immunity. That immunity may be partial. It still reduces transmission rates.

If they were serious about cocooning the most vulnerable the first thing they'd do is scrap ESA and PIP assessments, but that would cost the companies providing them money.

I definitely think they should do that. This is a crisis - it is precisely the right time to spend.
