Other countries diverge massively in their response. We don’t and it’s worth asking why, especiallywhen scientists are raising the alarm about a virus we know little about. Better safe than sorry.

Complete containment is impossible. But containment is still worthwhile because it slows it down and less people infected at any one time reduces the extent by which the health system is overloaded.

Please look at the deadly Spanish Influenza outbreak at the start of the twentieth century. Containment strategies led to three successive huge peaks for fatalities. Slowing the rate of increase gives the NHS intensive care units a chance of coping.

It’s fine to question it, and the government should communicate more clearly. But if people are saying we should be doing what other countries are doing, aren’t they also just saying “but science”?
