Response to COVID19 feels much more panicked than with Swine Flu - is that because social media was smaller; because we’d had several epidemics one after the other, or was I just cushioned from the hysteria by being at uni?

By chance, the other person getting their make up done was a person who’d had and survived it, and said the big problem is the number of people tested in each country differs, ditto whether their death’s recorded as by coronavirus or not.

The reason there's a difference is because its calculated based on every known case. If someone got a mild case and didn't report it, it's not counted. It also includes the number of people exposed at the beginning. Take for example china....

... At the beginning they were being swamped by an unknown pathogen. There were no population controls and hospitals were overwhelmed. Now as soon as someone is suspected as having a case, they are isolated. They're monitored and they get treatment before it gets really bad.
