Response to COVID19 feels much more panicked than with Swine Flu - is that because social media was smaller; because we’d had several epidemics one after the other, or was I just cushioned from the hysteria by being at uni?

I was going off these iphone notes I hastily made when reviewing the papers on the BBC the other night, and mortality still seems all over the place.pic.twitter.com/USoccxjCS7

@DawnHFoster Also the R-naught value of swine flu was 1.4 to 1.6, while for Corona virus it is 2.5 (current estimate). So: more virulent = more difficult to contain/eradicate = more bad news for specific (but large) groups in society like the immunocompromised + elderly.Thanks. The response was partly guided by shaky epidemiology in Mexico where Swine Flu first appeared - the mortality rate appeared a lot higher than was, as they were attributing a lot more deaths to it than they should have done. Even allowing for that, COVID 19 has much higher rate

Covid 19 is also genetically way more similar to sars than swine flu or any other type of flu. It’s mortality rate is lower but it’s more infectious making it deadlier.
-
Sars only infected 8000 people over about 6 months, covid 19 is on 110,000 already
