Was inside a prison today for the first time in my life visiting a young person held on remand. All the young men being visited by mothers, fathers, partners, children. People crying, people laughing, kids screaming. Life goes on, even under all the pressure that prison exerts.

The experience was one of the most stressful I've ever been through, but maybe also uplifting. Young man I was visiting was doing ok – not great, but coping. Him, his friends and I will all get through this, because we will have to.

Have done the same volunteering in women’s prisons - starting again soon, and it’s desperately sad, but when men go to prison their families tend to rally around them. When women do, they’re often persona non grata to their friends and families.

And really, well done for doing it, it’s so important to remind prisoners they’re human.

Thanks Dawn. Unfortunately for me, he's someone I care about, so looks like I'm in this for as long as he's in there.

So sorry to hear that. It’s a really oppressive atmosphere. Make sure you talk to friends about it, because it can feel really isolating and upsetting.
