Priest in Mass told us last year he saw a lad on the tube with completely intact ashes on his head the following Tuesday.

I might be wrong but I think some branches of Eastern Christianity start Lent on a different date, Clean Monday, which is the monday after our Ash Wednesday. So he may have had his ashes just a day before?

He spoke to him apparently, and he was Catholic, just liked the attention it drew, which as the priest pointed out is not particularly humble or useful.

Same, and read a really interesting tweet from a priest yesterday on when to wash them off: essentially, if they’re a source of pride, wash them off. If you feel self-conscious, keep them on for humility.
