Maundy Thursday, aye. Last year the head priest approached me before Mass to ask me to come forward (understandably no one volunteers) and it was one of the most excruciating things I’ve endured.

There are lots of different schools of thought: if you’re keeping it on for pride, wash it off. If it makes you feel self conscious, keep it on to make you humble. But not showering for a week is at the very extreme end.

I might be wrong but I think some branches of Eastern Christianity start Lent on a different date, Clean Monday, which is the monday after our Ash Wednesday. So he may have had his ashes just a day before?

I can't remember whether all those churches actually practice ashing, but it's worth bearing in mind.
