Tell me about your local “characters” growing up. We had a guy who introduced himself as “Mad Alan”, wandered round with three dogs and claimed he liked having sex in bins.

You would have liked Annie McNeill. She lived in a big house on the Lansdowne on her own, had loads of designer gear and would float about in a white Merc with shock of wild red hair in a scarf. Could buy and sell you. Eccentric. Mysterious. Great craic. Said looksy all the time.

We had a neighbour whose nickname was Johnny Shiloh, (after the US civil war General). He'd fought in WW2 & as kids we'd 'fire' at him with our toy guns, & he always used to 'return fire'
(he had PTSD, I realise now). Such a sweet, eccentric, good-natured man

Every day after school all the children in our cul de sac would line up at the front window of one of the houses. We would all sing auntie Mabel, auntie Mabel and an old lady would open the window and give us all sweets
