Proportional representation: so instead of an X next to one candidate, you rank them from 1 for your favourite, until you have no more preferences. Then each area gets a set number of reps once preferences are redistributed/quotas met.

Also someone on FB has tried to explain the quotas and redistributed votes thereafter. I'm getting clearer slowly!

Oh yeah, it’s a little more complex, but I still think fairer than our system: you have more of a say and it’s easier to keep out people you really can’t stand. There’s a great video I’ll find for you...

Yep: Mary Lou McDonald (SF) got far more first preferences and was instantly elected. Varadkar thought he’d hit the required quota but took five counts which is unheard of. (Not the one I’m thinking of but similar https://www.rte.ie/archives/exhibitions/688-elections/703-general-election-2011/139419-voting-system-explained/ …)
