I got pretty well-paid part-time jobs in shops & a call centre (minimum wage came in when I was in primary school). Then the 2008 crisis hit & call centres outsourced abroad, so for my siblings the same jobs were taken up by adults on zero hour contracts.https://twitter.com/ShippersUnbound/status/1213558543565164546 …

What the heck are people doing instead of Saturday jobs? I worked in a petrol station and did a paper round for years. Taught me punctuality, work ethic and a respect for spending money I had worked hard to earn. And I only got £2 an hour in the mid 1990s

Which meant they couldn’t get jobs without experience. And they couldn’t get the experience because they hadn’t had jobs before. And so on and so on. 🤷🏼‍♀️

& now adults have to fight teens for those 0 hour jobs. The last cafe I was at was slowly pushing out adult baristas and hiring teens cause they r cheaper It was really depressing cause it was all I could find, & I lost a lot of hours. and I have a 2 year old That's capitalism

But, even so, the teens I work with are in a bad position because it feels like owners thrive on weird antagonisms. Ugh. Everyone is effed and it is so tiring and depressing. And I am constantly angry.

What is the law on children working nowadays? I worked Friday evenings after school and all day Saturday stacking shelves in a supermarket when I was thirteen years old. I had to contribute to the cost of my school uniform. How times have changed!

When I was a teen, in the 70s, you could get a job with your eyes shut. You could pick and choose between shop work, factory, fruit picking etc. Always managed to fill my student vacs. For my kids now, it is a real struggle to find anything, and you have to exploit connections.

I worked from age 13 in a hair salon in the 70s, I shampooed hair, swept the floor and made coffee after school on Thursdays & Fridays and all day on Saturdays. Rubbish pay but tips and free haircuts made up for it.

my nieces and nephews have managed to find Saturday jobs (last one just going to uni) so they do exist if you hunt them down. mainly in hospitality.
