Yeah, they made a big thing of it being “the bubble”. I barely left campus during first year (there’s a 24 Tesco, mini-shopping centre, and Megabus bus stop behind my halls. Also meant a proliferation of cheap housing in Leamington or where I lived, Coventry.

Central London here, where no academic can afford to live (unless “like a student” is your thing). So many of us commute into my small department from beyond the M25 that at one point we referred to it as Cambridge-on-Thames. TWO of my colleagues’ wives and kids are in New York.

New York?! That’s the most extreme version of the two-body problem I’ve come across. As well as bloody expensive.
