Bristol has expanded it’s uni so much seminar sizes have jumped 10 to 30, they’ve told students to move to Newport, and to go study on a BOAT because the library’s too crowdedhttps://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/jan/01/bristol-students-told-study-ss-great-britain-overcrowding …

Even with a railcard, the fare from Newport is £12.00 a day. The train takes 30 minutes, the uni’s a 25 minute walk from the station, and the only affordable flats for students in Newport are at least 20 minutes from the station. Ludicrous, money-grabbing irresponsibility.

My smaller lectures were that size. Our seminars were in our lecturers’ offices. @DanielKatz6 could you fit 30 kids in your office for a seminar on Hawthorne?

When I worked there, 2012-14, the cap-removal-related expansion was underway, which was putting pressure on teaching room space (since Bristol's urban campus isn't large) which meant an increasing tyranny of the timetabling authorities--which was *not* good for commuters like me.

Warwick had huge numbers of commuting teachers too, and I imagine have the same problem too

The higher education participation rate is barely higher than it was in 2011.

Removal of UG caps probably the biggest and most destructive change in Higher Education of the last decade and almost uncommented upon outside HE. Turned UK HE into a privatised free market. Huge class sizes and shift from staff -> estate investment the inevitable consequence.

Yep, “we took away your UG teaching grant so just up your UG numbers with no income.” [Eight years later] What do you mean you had no infrastructure in place?
