Anaemics: what OTC things help (A&E blood tests showed I was anaemic) - want to do anything I can before NYE doc’s appointment. But don’t know if most supplements are snake oil, I should just eat red meat.

If you do take iron, ferrograd c is good. The added vit c helps ease the effect of the iron on your stomach

Does personal experience of treating it count? It depends on the cause. If I remember correctly some anticonvulsants can be associated with folic acid deficiency.

I have low iron that sometimes means I can't give blood, I try and take iron supplements and when I do it's ok, they tell me that iron increases the number of red blood cells you can produce.

Hi Dawn, I was anaemic for years before cancer and premature menopaused saved me (/snark). Iron pills work. I took 2 ferrous sulfate per day to build iron up, then 1 every day or other day to maintain. The key is to take pills on empty stomach, WITH ORANGE OR APPLE JUICE.

Empty stomach because iron binds to anything, like coffee, tea, breakfast ... so take iron first thing, shower get dressed etc, and then have breakfast. With juice because vitamin C helps its absorption. I would get stomachaches without the juice. This works.
