Don't fully despair, it's not a myth without foundation. "Popty" is the word for oven, so if you had a normal kitchen, you might refer to "popty poeth" (the oven that gets hot) and "popty ping" (the oven that goes ping). It's like calling water "corporation pop".

'Pob ty' was an old term for a communal oven at the end of a row of cottages (= 'the house for all') hence the migration to popty. But it's alleged that someone's Nan added the ping. But Dawn is correct.
