No one should go into politics to make a load of cash, and the basic salary is almost three times the average UK salary.https://twitter.com/RMCunliffe/status/1197497864655691776 …

Unpopular opinion: If you want to ban MPs from taking second jobs, how about paying them a competitive wage? The basic MP salary is a fraction of what many could earn in the private sector. Or keep it as it is, and accept that you'll end up with a lot of mediocre people. https://twitter.com/kadhim/status/1197491698621960192 …

Pretty disgraceful associating the low waged with mediocrity imo.

Yeah, it’s the “competitive” bit I was really taking issue with. Just don’t think there are a surfeit of wildly skilled, principled people who are put off by the salary.

According to @IsabelHardman’s analysis in her book, you need to be fairly independently wealthy to run as even a ppc, let alone become an MP, in the first place, or at least well-sponsored. Not sure whether that means we should pay MPs more or not, though.

Greed and corruption...They can't help themselves...born to rule mentality...morals and humanity, principals sold to the highest bidder... Some even sell themselves for fame and glory!

I don't have the copy with me but 'The Alfred' newspaper for Bridgewater during the Great Reform act of 1832 complained about not being able to take bribes or be 'entertained' at candidates expenses. It also said whatever next? MPs demanding wages?

No no, Dawn, everyone agrees that we’re living in a golden age of political brilliance, purely because politics is allowed to ‘compete’ with the private sector. No holes in that argument, no siree.

This rather suggests people in nursing, teaching, research, are all mediocre.

I often think it would be good to ban MPs from ever having a job again, to stop the 'revolving doors' lark. Just retire them off on double the average wage on the Isle of Wight. Convert Parkhurst into a retirement home, or something like that.
