I see a parallel. In my home state of Washington it was in the 1930s when it was made possible (hydro-electric power) to bring electricity to everyone in the state. Before then, it was privately owned & those companies saw no interest in bringing decent utilities to rural areas.

And it genuinely improved/changed the lives of so many people. Yes it cost money but investment in utilities and society is always a solid one. People can't grow their businesses in some parts of the UK b/c of the lack of access to reliable broadband.
