I remember being told one weekend that there was no concern about my wife's deteriorating condition because her vital signs were stable and so she would be alive at 9am on Monday. This was 5 years ago. No doubt it is worse now.

Lots of full-time consultants (10PAs) work 4 days (albeit 40 hours), plus on-call weekends (at whatever local frequency), so could certainly cope with this and would probably encourage more people in, so we didn't have so many gaps!!

Very, very hard to get into medicine now from experience of son's peer group, not sure shorter hours will help intake but probably aid retention
