How come I can pronounce every non-anglicised Welsh and Irish placename going but have been mispronouncing “Lewes” all my life. What is going on with the English language.

I’m from near Lewes but once went for a job interview at a Welsh radio station. The interview included a test of loads of place names and I failed on “Tredegar”.

There was a petrol scandal in Ystrad Mynach a few years ago and I actually phoned the BBC news desk to helpfully point out that it was NOT pronounced Wye-strad Mine-Ack AT ALL, but they didn’t seem very grateful.
