How come I can pronounce every non-anglicised Welsh and Irish placename going but have been mispronouncing “Lewes” all my life. What is going on with the English language.

Mentions now just lots of English people telling me how they mispronounce Welsh/Irish names. Favourite was the guy who corrected me and utterly mangled Dun Laoghaire.

I've lost count of the number of times I've heard English and American people pronounce Donegal as "Donnergull".
