How come I can pronounce every non-anglicised Welsh and Irish placename going but have been mispronouncing “Lewes” all my life. What is going on with the English language.

Idk if this is a Thing, but I can do Scottish & Irish place names and can do most Welsh places after hearing them. I assume that's because Scots/Irish Gaelic are similar and Welsh is a Celtic language too. Maybe it's just brain wiring?

Scots/Irish/Welsh are all phonetic, with a handful of exceptions but English is all over the place

I know that where there's dispute about the meaning of a name of a place (often when it's been given a shoddy anglicisation from Irish/ Scots Gaelic), toponymists like to seek out older locals to pick up nuances that they might have retained even long after the linguistic shift.
