How come I can pronounce every non-anglicised Welsh and Irish placename going but have been mispronouncing “Lewes” all my life. What is going on with the English language.

Oh nooooo. Like in Irish, the stress is normally on the second syllable so it’s Tred-E-gur (I lived nearby for a bit)
